The printer price is the cover charge. The label stock is the tab that keeps coming. Check the exact supply rule, then run your own yearly cost.
The cheap printer can be the expensive choice.
Two printers can do the same job and leave you with completely different supply bills. One may require its own branded labels. Another may warn that generic stock puts the warranty at risk. A third may accept most direct-thermal labels but make you figure out where a giant roll is supposed to live.
That is not one fuzzy “proprietary labels” problem. It is three different contracts. Read the exact one before you fall in love with the price on the box.

Write down the exact printer model, including the generation.
Confirm the label is the right print type, width, shape, and adhesive.
Check whether the printer takes a roll, fanfold stack, or a specific cartridge.
Decide whether a warranty warning is a risk you are willing to own.
Only then compare the cost of the supplies that survived those checks.

Usable labels = labels in the pack x (1 - waste percentage). Cost per usable label = pack price / usable labels.
Packs per year = annual label use / usable labels, rounded up because nobody sells you 0.37 of a roll. Annual spend = packs x pack price.
Cheaper stock loses if it does not fit the printer, the width is wrong, the adhesive fails your job, or using it creates a warranty risk you refuse to accept. Run the compatibility check before you crown a winner.
What this calculator refuses to make up
It does not know today's marketplace price, whether a random third-party roll feeds cleanly, or how well the adhesive sticks to your boxes. It also cannot turn a manufacturer claim into our hands-on experience.
That is deliberate. Put in the price you can verify. Use the exact manufacturer's supply rules. If a label seller promises compatibility, treat that as the seller's promise until you have better proof.
The honest decision
If only one supply passes the fit check, the calculator does not get a vote. If both fit, use the annual difference to decide whether flexibility is worth paying for. If neither fits, close the tab and keep your damn money. If the real question is whether one machine can cover shipping, product, barcode, and address labels, check whether one printer can cover every label job.
