Why is my shipping label tiny, cropped, or sideways?

Before you reinstall drivers or buy another damn printer, check the file. Three quick decisions will tell you which layer to fix next.

1What kind of wrong are we looking at?

No script? No problem. Start with the preview.

Your label travels through four separate layers. Work left to right and stop when the preview goes bad. Buying hardware comes last.

Tiny or stuck in a corner

Look at the print preview. If it shows a full letter-size sheet with a small label inside, return to the platform and generate a 4 x 6 thermal label. If the preview is already a clean 4 x 6 page, select the matching 4 x 6 paper preset in the printer dialog and compare the new preview.

Cut off at an edge

First match the source label format and destination paper size. Then check the scaling choice in the app you are actually using. Adobe notes that Actual size can crop content that does not fit, while Fit changes the page to the printable area. Use the platform or printer maker's documented setting instead of guessing.

Sideways or mostly blank

If the preview is sideways, fix the format or orientation before the job reaches the printer. If the preview is correct, reselect the 4 x 6 media preset and check orientation in the current print dialog.

Computer works, phone doesn't

Stop changing the printer. Your mobile route is different. Check whether the platform sends the PDF through the operating-system print menu, a share sheet, or the printer maker's app. "Works with iPhone" does not promise direct printing from Etsy, Shopify, or eBay.

It worked until something updated

Treat saved defaults as guilty until proven innocent. Choose the printer again, reselect 4 x 6 paper, and inspect the preview before reinstalling anything. If those settings are still correct, use the exact printer maker's current driver or app support.

When the preview is clean

Still losing an edge? Measure before you scale.

A correct 4-by-6 preview can still be wider than the printer's actual printable area or the loaded media preset. Scaling at random can make the barcode smaller without fixing the mismatch.

  1. Measure the label across the direction that enters the printer.
  2. Measure the design area, including barcode quiet zones and required margins.
  3. Compare both numbers with the exact model's documented media and maximum print width.
  4. Confirm the loaded roll or continuous-media family before changing scale.

If the shape is right but the print is faint or streaked, run the print-quality bench test. If it skips labels or feeds blanks, follow the physical feed path.
